Kenyan-Born Polly Irungu Lands Role as Photographer for Maryland Governor Wes Moore

Polly Irungu, a Kenyan-born photographer with an extensive background in public service, has been appointed as a photographer in Maryland’s Executive Office of the Governor, effective May 1.

Irungu will document the administration of Governor Wes Moore, capturing significant moments and events throughout his term. Irungu expresses enthusiasm for her new role, stating, "I'm honoured to continue my journey in public service, documenting the people, moments, and stories that shape the Moore-Miller Administration."

Before joining Governor Moore's team, Irungu served as the Official Photo Editor for Vice President Kamala Harris from July 2022 until January 2025. In this capacity, she played a crucial role in shaping the visual narrative of the Biden-Harris administration, highlighting its dynamism and commitment to diversity. Irungu's career extends beyond her government service; she has made substantial contributions to the creative industry, particularly in promoting diversity and inclusion.

In July 2020, she founded Black Women Photographers (BWP), an organisation dedicated to amplifying the work and voices of Black and African women creatives. BWP has rapidly evolved from a visionary concept to a global movement, currently boasting over 2,100 members across 60 countries. The initiative serves as a critical network for both emerging and established photographers, providing support, resources, and opportunities for advancement.

Through BWP, Irungu has facilitated significant financial support for photographers worldwide, addressing the limited access to resources often faced by marginalised artists. The organisation has provided over $185,000 in financial grants and an additional $60,000 in camera equipment, enabling talented photographers to enhance their skills and pursue sustainable careers.

Irungu’s dedication to fostering equity within the photography industry has positioned her as a prominent advocate for representation and equitable opportunities. Her efforts extend beyond financial assistance; she is a sought-after speaker and advocate for the creative economy, regularly engaging in discussions on visual storytelling and the business of photography. Her insights into the challenges faced by underrepresented groups in media have made her a leading voice in conversations about diversity and inclusion.

The announcement of Irungu's appointment has been met with widespread acclaim. Communication strategist Michael Kitum praises her achievement, stating, "Congrats Polly! Keep soaring," while Rini Sampath, Director of Strategic Accounts at ANALYGENCE, expressed admiration, saying, "Very lucky to have you. You're an immense talent!"

Irungu's appointment in Maryland is particularly noteworthy as it highlights the increasing recognition of Black women photographers in influential spaces. Historically, government photography has been a field dominated by a narrow demographic. However, with professionals like Irungu at the forefront, the landscape is evolving. Her work not only documents political and governmental milestones but also ensures that diverse perspectives are represented in the stories told.

Irungu holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Oregon. Her academic background has equipped her with the skills to blend storytelling and advocacy seamlessly. Her ability to use photography as a tool for historical preservation and social change continues to garner admiration.
