Political Link Likely in Mpeketoni Attack, Says Ole Lenku

Printer-friendly versionPDF version

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Lenku now says the government is not ruling out political involvement in the Mpeketoni attack that left 48 people dead on Sunday night.

Lenku said even as security forces continue investigating the cause of the attack and hunt down the perpetrators, they would pursue possible political involvement in the latest killings.

Lenku has told a press conference that once investigations are completed, action will be taken against the perpetrators and those inciting violence.

While making reference to his recent warnings to CORD politicians who have been holding rallies across the country, Lenku said the red line had been crossed but did not elaborate.

Asked if he was linking CORD leader Raila Odinga’ utterances to the attacks, Lenku responded: ‘His history is a book Kenyans have seen and read and know. It is not me to say it because it is in the public domain of his political activities.”

Lenku immediately left for Mpeketoni with Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo to assess the situation. - Capital FM News

Complete nonsense. What political. Now they are blaming Raila! Then arrest him if you have evidence. Ole Lenku has completely failed and Uhuru is insulting Kenyans by keeping him on the job. The guy has no clue on matters to do with security. How on earth does 50 thugs terrorize a town for close to 3 hours and then escape on trucks? Jubelee government is a joke!

This confirms that RAO is right in all aspects re: insecurity in Kenya.

What is this guy Ole Lenku talking about? He should be telling us how many troops and how close they are in pursuing and killing those terrorists. Instead he is issuing ultimatums to politicians and promising "prosecution" of the Mpeketoni attackers. Are you serious Bw. Lenku? Those thugs have killed innocent people, they should be meeting their fate the same way as we speak. Oh my God! How I miss the late John Michuki. If it were Michuki, troops would be combing the entire area bordering southern Somalia.

This is serious and Kenyans like Osiro, Jena N, Safi Wa Safi and the likes of Njeru need to realize that Kenya is larger than any political leader or individual. It's time you folks get serious with your shallow political thinking and condemn this ACT of thuggery with seriouness. When life is lost as a result of some negative political utterances, action has to be taken and fast regardless of who is involved. Big problem with Kenya, ALL POLITICIANS ARE INTERLINKED and hard to serve justice equally regardless of the crime magnitude. I hope this time someone will be held answerable for this crimes either he be from Jubilee, ODM, or any other political affiliation. ENOUGH SAID.

Exactly! Tell them Jena!

I don't think you are serious either. Are you saying that the Somali terrorists were incited by politicians? The Jubelee government is purely incompetent. It is as simple as that. Tell me how the militants come to Kenya and terrorize a town for a whole 3 hours. And you say we have a government? Bure kabisa..

@Arsenal2012.......You just said what a lot of us have been saying all along, specifically to Jubiliee THUGS and their supporters who are OBSESSED and PARANOID about Raila, but want the whole country to ignore what is going on as they blame everything on him.Every Kenyan should start thinking that way..we only have one Kenya..Get it? And FYI Uhuru or the Kenyattas do not represent the whole Kikuyu tribe! Or Kenyans for that matter. Please get it idiots or all the BLIND followers and stop sounding like Duale trying to involve all the muslims in his problems.

I can see the shallowness with which some of you look at issues. When CORD held its meeting in Nairobi it was reported about 10,000 officers were involved. Nairobi has no such numbers. They were reassigned from other posts. Purpose, to protect a war monger and an imbecile who had nothing to tell Kenyans.Yesterday hundreds of officers were brought to Mombasa to secure the same guys.Sure the work of police is to protect whomever, but that cannot be at the expense of the country. Kajwang led people in what sounded like a well rehearsed chant/turned song "mbom, mbom , mbom" what did he know? The statement by CORD this morning seems to have been ready! What did they know? Why should one individual use all the resources of the security apparatus when the country has been under attack? When victims of violence have yet to settle in Eldoret, Nakuru, Naivasha and all why should those who caused their pain be allowed to write another script? How does firing Lenku or anybody else save Kenyans from their own murderous ways of supporting terrorists and clapping at those insane politicians calling them to murder? Everything is working according to CORD's script- insecurity and your agenda one is proven. How can we isolate external aggressors when we have internal terrorist hell bent on killing Kenyans? How many people will die, how many graves do you need to see before Kenyans wake up and realize that insecurity will not spare of us no matter how insular we may feel?To hear someone like kajwang who was in charge of our borders as immigration minister dance to the tune of death of Kenyans tells you what a country we have.Unpatriotic, idiotic characters who are happy dancing peoples graves. What a shame. I said here before Kenya has its priorities wrong. At a time of serious external/internal threats the priority was given to vetting police offices and sacking them left and right. No country does that in times of war. I urged the president to intervene and suspend the madness but Kenyans relish drama. What better way than televised lynching of innocent police officers who gave their lives to serve but must be humiliated as a form of entertainment for NGOs and political hacks who have found a career vilifying police officers. It is dumb- it is pathetic. No Kenyan will come from the moon to serve/save us.We have to secure ourselves and trust ourselves. The hounds are out now baying for Hon. Lenku, Kimaiyo and those whose names betray them. The kajwangs are now heroes and saviours- hogwash!

Dude, I wish you had an ounce of sanity and comprehension.Violence killed my mother in 1992.Violence made me bury my grandparents in shallow graves without dignity.Violence cleared my whole village in 2007 and left hundreds homeless/destitute.Violence removed all our kids from schools and ruined their lives.I have no place today to call home. Our kids were distributed to well wishers the way you do to animals during drought.Violence was meted to me as IDP in 1969.You know nothing.Your are a heartless brat who will follow any moron as if you have no brain of your own.My pain is personal. My experience real and on-going.No one expects you to read anything! Someone else carries your brain.I will fight for my child's right to life and will meet those who advocate violence with my pen.No child should be exposed to violence to satiate the ego of a maniac. He will not succeed this time round. What has Gatundu to do with me? My grandpa was born in Kericho in 1896.My dad was born there. My mother was born in Nandi-what do i have to do with gatundu? As one who has endured violence since 1969,where did you read that i said Kenya was safe? The killers of my family walk free and hold meetings. That is what pains.Tell a child to read this for you! I have served my country with honor teaching in most marginal areas of our country.I have taught hundreds of young people of all shades in our universities with honor and distinction.I am glad you are not any of those. For you would have gotten the "powers to read".

Maybe you should write a book..how about that? Not that i don't sympathize. Obviously i'm one of the Kenyans who advocate for peace and look beyond tribe...i traveled a lot to Eldoret etc during the clashes and have 1st hand info from both sides.Maybe you should go fight Raila if you think that he's the reason for your bitterness and see if that will solve all your problems.

You need to go back to class one ASAP.And shouldn't you be blaming mzee Kenyatta, his family and mama Ngina (ivory queen) Kenyatta for grabbing your land and that's why you and your family have been squatters all your lives? How is Raila to blame for that you IDIOT? Mmmh? I rest my case...never argue with a FOOL. And i feel very sorry for your imaginary students. You poor thing boo hoo hoo.You don't even have the courage to reveal your last name...do you?And you have the nerve to call yourself a teacher. How embarrassing.I could tutor you.

Simplistic, knee-jerk reactions have never solved anything, but sadly that is the attitude of most people who comment on this forum. Majority of you are based in the diaspora with very little knowledge of actually what is happening on the ground in Kenya apart from what you reading from various magazines of which most of it is biased and shallow. And also, there are those who suffer from hate syndrome which will eventually consumer them, but will not solve a thing about Kenya.

As progressive minded Kenyans, we should unite when motherland is under attack, but giving opinion on who should be fired or who is competent or not,  is nothing more than hot air. Insults is just a reflection of you, shame on you.

RAO diatribe has just revealed what type of a 'leader' he is and that has sealed his fate, he will never be the president of Kenya. Yes, we have many problems, many which were created under his watch, but inciting violence is not the way to solve them.

It is grossly shameful that, as stated in a related article, "A group of about 50 heavily-armed gunmen driving in three vehicles torched homes, banks and hotels, and in the process shot scores of people, killing 48 of them. The entire attack lasted over 4 hours." To begin with, who counted these attackers; or is it another false count like in the Westgate massacre in which Lenku claimed 15 attackers but turned out to be only 4 as accurately counted from FBI tapes?? Surely, from September last year, Al Shabaab has declared war against our country. Yet, these evil jihadist have since then attacked police stations in Mandera several times; the last one killing 12 officers, taking fallen bodies to Somalia. No action by Kenya police or KDF to recover the bodies of the fallen police officers. Now, we have jihadist thugs terrorize a town for over 4 hours, kill 48 people and destroy houses and businesses; then escape without being scathed? What kind of a government allows rug tag thugs terrorize its citizens repeatedly without protecting its people? What is the point of having a police force and KDF if street thugs gonna kill police officers and innocent people time and again without according vulnerable border towns greater protection? If these morons in the Jubilee administration used their peanut brains, they could have manned remote police posts with KDF and proper military hardware to deal with this constant threat. No, instead Lenku had to fire police officers, chiefs and sub-chiefs because some greedy goon allowed senseless criminals to manufacture, distribute and sell methanol in bars to unsuspecting people. Then, Lenku accused innocent police officers, chiefs and sub-chiefs of quote "asleep on the job." even though it wasn't their responsibility to stop sale of a licensed product. Now, if I may ask, was the whole Jubilee administration including police and KDF asleep on the job in this shameful attack and so many others before that? In a real democracy people would by now be clamoring for the Jubilee government to resign en masse from the president, DP, Lenku and other CS to all security chiefs including Kimaiyo and Kirangi. Our country has become a joke to be repeatedly attacked at will by rug tag street thugs; and all we are promised is the government is doing investigations and will bring perpetrators to justice. What a sad joke!!!!

I am abhorred by Ole Lenku's and by extension, the government's implication of CORD in this very serious insecurity issue. This is belittling a very grave matter through invoking politics into the mix. Ole Lenku and government have a right to suspect CORD and investigate them accordingly but throwing a jab at them so directly in public is a sure way of inciting the common mwananchi. I am not absolving CORD for that matter, neither anybody else but it's high time all parties stopped politicizing this life-and-death issue that the country is facing, Raila and CORD included. We really need men and women of sober judgement who can objectively think and act clearly without entertaining far-fetched ideas.

On the other hand Raila and his party recently said they have ideas on how to tackle the insecurity facing the country but apparently, they are waiting for a 100 000 Kenyans to die before they do it. Will Kenya ever again get genuinely patriotic leaders the likes of JM Kariuki, Tom Mboya, Seroney, Bishop Muge and a few others? Right now l don't see any...God save Kenya

As you all verbally attack each other using baseless facts here are some questions I would like any one of you to answer me?
We deal with Taliban and other terrorists in the diaspora and all the terrorists like the slightest mileage and claim to any work done whether it has a loss of life and property..... my question is where is the video footage of the attack?, not yet released video.......as you want to put it where is it ?and all terrorist worldwide never hide their identities during attacks they know they will be dead either way but they hide their identities only when training. this is not al shabab as you all want Kenyans to believe........
They never use twitter it will be located easily even if it's in somali it will through a website address so my other question......... how comes a  paid up mercenary who is busy training misled youth and with the guise of faking al shabab flags and way of life get into Kenya? kindly tell me which border did he use? As our politicians busy distance themselves from the mess. Ask what transpired in a meeting? and who attended? and which planners had a meeting at a house of a businessman in Nyali,Mombasa who happens to be the brother of the governor and it was 2 days after the governor and senator came from the US? some people leaked some information to The late cleric ............who was later gunned down.
As you all are busy trying to make or country go to hell. Ask yourselves these questions?
why in Mombasa and some parts of Nairobi of late some misled youth are busy at bus stop taking stock of who is from upcountry, businesses , properties and who is from the coast they use smartphones to take photo's even of cars and houses? They even know which houses to attack if and when an attack will take place who stands to gain from all this is it the MRC reloaded or the ODM, CORD group?
As we are busy trying to burn our Kenya so fast who is a genuine policeman , NIS, KDF forces personel.......... the current wave of evil doctrines has allot of  sympathizers. How  does the government change shifts, personnel in each work station.....? kindly can the government reshuffle everyone and it should happen now?
As we really try and demonize an elected President and deputy President might I ask all of you to kindly remember an employee who told the Deputy President that he was only answerable to Raila Odinga he was eventually fired. would you honestly employ someone who will be hell bent on sabotaging all your efforts and giving state information to everyone out there?
The government will soon publish a list of all government employees  in all sectors and where everyone comes from ........... we then shall really see how fake the tribalism crap is all about.
Lastly as we say  education adds value to someone's life and if you really attended school and went through the education system in Kenya you will not blame anyone who deserves merit be it a person from Kalenjin or gema communities. have you all bothered to check the qualifications of the government appointees the one's you all say they are elected through tribalism? Do you hold better qualifications than them then come forward and lets counter-check and verify your all your documents the we see which government job best suits you.
  Enough said
GOD BLESS KENYA.

How can this president have guts to say that local political outfit  is behind the attack without awaiting preliminary investigation. This is putting  the country in unnecessary panic.

During the westgate attack the president was quoted throwing numbers that were inconsistent with what was  going on. To this day nobody lost their jobs over Westgate. Surely even a nursery school kid know how to respond better. Six hours later and then you are caught off flat footed and off guard again.

So we have people on the ground who are saying that the people were speaking somali and were of somali origin. They also ordered people in swahili.

The president should avoid jumping to conclusions.
