Councillor Elizabeth Kangethe Inaugurated as Mayor of Barking & Dagenham in the UK

Elizabeth Wanjiru Kengethe was on Friday, June 6th inaugurated as Mayor of Barking & Dagenham, a borough located in East London, UK.

Mayor Kangethe, a former school teacher in Kiambu, Kenya, was elected unopposed as Mayor on a Labor party ticket back in February of this year. She has been councillor of Parsloe Ward since 2010.

Mayor Kangethe is one of several Kenyans in the UK currently holding elective positions in various UK towns:

  • Mayor Abdul Mohamed: Mayor of Southwark since May 22, 2013
  • Councillor Abdul Razak Osman: Councillor for Charnwood Ward in Leicester since 2007
  • Coucillor Mary Kiruthi: Councillor for Townstal Ward in Darthmouth since January, 2014
  • Councillor Daniel Munyambu: Councillor for Basildon Ward in Essex
