A conference targeting Kenyans living in Europe will be held next month in a bid to encourage them to invest more at home. The meeting which has been jointly organized by Kenya High Commission in the UK and Kenya Diaspora Investment Forum groups will take place on February 25 in London.

It is expected to attract key players from the government , Kenya Investment Authority , representatives of Nairobi Securities Exchange, local banks and other investment bodies. They will present the various options that the Kenyans diaspora have in terms of investment.

Current figures indicate that remittances from Europe contribute about 30 per cent of total remittances to Kenya. However, over 50 per cent of this is sent through family and friends and directed towards consumption, with little going towards business start-ups and savings. In November alone , remittances from Europe amounted to $24,056 million (about Sh2.1 billion).

This is a conference long overdue. If we make remittances to cater for consumption without long term investments, I think there is a very big problem. Lets all chat way forward.
