Canadian border officials have seized 73 kg. of khat (Miraa) hidden in fresh roses shipped from Kenya, the second largest bust of the drug in Alberta this year.

An air cargo package labelled as fresh flowers arrived on Aug. 31 and when officials searched it, they found 402 bundles of khat — a leafy substance grown in east Africa that gives its users a cocaine or amphetamine-like effect.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is continuing.

This was the 19th seizure of khat in Alberta this year.
