When Oprah announced a talent search for a talk show host on her OWN Network, Mukami Kinoti Kimotho, 37, entered the competition. Though she did not win, she made herself a media personality and launched Mukami.TV, where she commands millions of followers. She spoke to The Standard's Allan Olingo.

When you meet her, the first thing you notice is her beautiful spirit. She talks in an inspiring tone

that is uplifting and informs me that her work is encouraging people to keep pushing past all the obstacles and to achieve big things.

Though there is a common adage in the military that "Generals do not retire, they just fade away", honour has ensured that one retired Kenyan General won’t just fade away. His star has started shining even brighter in retirement.

When as a young officer he got the rare opportunity to study at one of the world’s most prestigious military institutions, Lieutenant General (retired) Augostino S K Njoroge’s niche’ in the army was assured.

Mwalimu Peter Ndiangui

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Lee County Florida Branch gave this year’s President’s Award for this year to Peter Ndiang’ui, a Kenyan teacher. The award was announced during the NAACP Freedom Fund Dinner held in Fort Myers, Florida early this month. This award is given to the person who is believed to have made the greatest contribution to the advancement of the goals of the NAACP. Mr. James Muwakkil, the branch President noted that the award was given to Peter Ndiang’ui in recognition of his incredible work with the youth of Lee County.

For the second year in a row, a Kenyan teacher, won the Lighthouse Award in Florida. Peter Ndiang’ui, 55, fondly referred to as Mwalimu is a social studies teacher in Oasis High School in Cape Coral, Southwest Florida. He migrated to USA as an expatriate teacher in Atlanta International School in 1997. He stayed in Atlanta for five years before migrating to the warmer Florida.

Mr. Daniel Munyambu has won a council seat on a Labour Ticket for the seat of Vange Ward in Basildon, Essex, UK on the just concluded local elections conducted on Thursday 5th May, 2011. Mr. Munyambu won by 52 per cent of the total votes getting more more votes than three other parties candidates votes combined together. The counting of votes ended about 3.00 a.m. on Friday morning and family and friends celebrated and congratulated Mr. Munyambu.

Rev George Okoth Otura

A Kenyan born preacher living in Canada is among hundreds of candidates vying for seat in the country’s federal elections due next month.

Rev George Okoth Otura, a former youth leader in both Ford-Kenya and the defunct Liberal Democratic Party has been nominated by the Christian Heritage Party, which fielded candidates in all the 46 electoral districts — the equivalent of Kenya’s constituencies.

Otura, 48, is campaigning to capture the York West Electoral District in the city of Toronto.

George Muumbo

During the day, George Muumbo is always on the run.  He begins with a call to family in Kenya followed by a full day of class at Alabama A&M University.  Then, he makes time to fix computers.  But, his day is not over just yet.  Muumbo said, "Then I go to my night job, where I work the graveyard shift until the next morning and I start it all over again."

Some people dream of starting the next Twitter. Kim Muhota hopes to start a Twitter of dreams.

He is the founder and chief executive of REMcloud, a start-up that on Tuesday plans to formally launch a would-be social network based around stories people experience while they sleep. Like Twitter, users of the site post snatches of text, in this case brief accounts of what they dreamed.

CNN unveils its Top 10 Heroes of 2010 this week. Evans Wadongo from Kenya was one of the winners, offering a light at the end of the tunnels for millions in poverty.

Evans, 23, invented a way for rural families in Kenya to replace smoky kerosene and fire light with solar power. Through his Use Solar, Save Lives program, he’s distributed an estimated 10,000 solar lanterns, for free.

Mr Daniel Mwaura Njuguna, a Kenyan living in Sweden, is vying for a councillor seat in the Botkyrka Municipality . Botkyrka Municipality (Botkyrka Kommun) is in the outskirts of Stockholm, Sweden.

The elections will be held on September 19, but postal voting starts Spetember 1, 2010.

Njuguna hails from Thika and has lived in Sweden for 20 years.
