A section of politicians from Ukambani are saying the Kamba got a raw deal from the NASA agreement unveiled yesterday that named Kalonzo Musyoka as Raila Odinga’s running mate in the upcoming general elections.
Addressing the media on Friday, National Assembly Minority Leader Francis Nyenze, who belongs to Kalonzo’s Wiper Party, said the coalition should have stuck to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Raila and Kalonzo I 2013 which stated that Kalonzo would be the coalition’s flag bearer come 2017.
“I want to say that the Kamba nation got a raw deal because there was a Memorandum of Understanding in 2013 that Honourable Kalonzo Musyoka supports Raila Odinga and we did that man-to-man. In 2017 it was to be Kalonzo Musyoka,” Nyenze said.
Nyenze said it will be difficult to convince Kamba voters to support the coalition without Kalonzo as the flag bearer, saying Kambas are tired of playing second fiddle and wanted their own to be the falg bearer this time round. "It would be a very difficult task to convince the Kamba nation to be the second fiddle in 2017," said Nyenze, adding that at least three other legislators from the Kamba region share the same concern.
The Kitui West MP said the committee formed to select the NASA flag bearer had decided that Kalonzo would be the flag bearer, and that the decision to change that was made at the last minute by “new people” without the knowledge of some people in the committee. "I was in the team and up to the last minute, Kalonzo was the flag bearer. How it changed we still do not know. We were all taken aback," quipped Nyenze.
The agreement unveiled on Thursday will have all five NASA principals share top governments in a possible NASA government, with some new positions to be created to accommodate them all. Under a NASA government, Raila Odinga (ODM) will be the President with Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper) serving as the Deputy President. A powerful Premier Cabinet Secretary postion to be created will be occupied by Musalia Mudavadi of ANC. The other two principals, Moses Wetangula (Ford Kenya) and Issac Rutto (CCM) will each hold the posts of Deputy Premier Cabinet Secretary.
